Around 2020, Isabelle Grosse-Mileo developed an extended body of work in collaboration with Parisian drag queens. She invited them to her studio, engaging in lengthy exchanges during the hours of preparation and makeup application that preceded the photographic session. She found herself fascinated yet unable to fully comprehend how their practices of hyper-femininity resonated with her own personal history as a woman. In response, she attempted to photograph herself as a drag queen. Yet rather than expressing the flamboyance characteristic of drag performance, these self-portraits register an awkward oscillation between feminine and masculine registers.
