Claiming verticality
Tenir debout
For people with disabilities, verticality means rising to eye level meeting the gaze of others at equal height. It's about reclaiming a fundamental aspect of human presence and social exchange that the able-bodied navigate without a second thought.
With an exoskeleton and caregiver assistance, walking becomes possible the body genuinely propelled into space, moving forward. The body, once bounded, pushes past its previous limits. What lay out of reach becomes accessible through this mechanical framework that both supports and drives motion.
This basic act that able-bodied people repeat thousands of times a day without thinking—standing, walking, moving through the world becomes a conscious, willed act of liberation. Each step carries weight, intention, and meaning and … joy ! The Frame emerges here as a liberating structure. Through the rigid support of an exoskeleton, people with severe disabilities claim verticality, a paradox where mechanical constraint creates freedom. The prosthetic device becomes not a marker of limitation but a tool of agency, challenging easy assumptions about bodies, technology, dependence, and autonomy.
This series, shot across several care centers, was published in the monthly magazine Bastille Magazine in 2023.
