An interactive movie about "distant initmacy", in collaboration with Dana Diminescu
Un film interactif sur l'intimité vécue à distance, en collaboration avec Dana Diminescu

UBI-Screen documents the intimate exchanges of Ange and Yoro, a couple separated for two years between Abidjan and Lille, who maintained their relationship through daily Skype conversations. During these calls, domestic life unfolds uninterrupted one partner might cook or pursue activities as though the other were physically present, revealing how digital mediation enables a paradoxical form of co-presence.

Isabelle Grosse employs a multi-camera system, filming Yoro in France with a professional camera while simultaneously recording both webcam feeds. This layering of high-resolution and pixelated imagery foregrounds the technological conditions through which intimacy must pass.

The interactive interface allows viewers to switch between protagonists without disrupting the conversation, activating them as participants in this mediated exchange. Developed in collaboration with sociologist Dana Diminescu, who specializes in migrants' use of communication technologies, the project was supported by the  CNC (National Center for Cinema).

This interactive work has been presented in numerous conferences, notably at the invitation of UCLA in California during the Forum on Migration (2016).

This video was first design as an interactive movie on internet but a local version, runnable on a computer, was acquired in 2023 by The National Museum of Immigration History, Palais de la Porte Dorée, for its permanent collection.

Due to outdated software online, UBI_Screen is no longer available on the web.

More documentation about Ubi_Screen available on demand.
